R. Buckminster Fuller, one of the great thinkers of the 20th century, is credited with the idea that the more people we serve, the more effective we become.
That has always resonated with Tom. As a CPA, this means that if he wants a bigger firm that makes a greater impact on the world, he needs to be able to do more for more clients. And the best way he knows to do that is to first work on himself and then allow his staff to work on themselves.
Tom will never forget the first workshop he held for the CPA and financial services firms with which he associated. Everyone who showed up was so excited to be there and highly engaged in every session. Why? Because we were working on us.
Yes, there was important technical education, but we also took the time to focus on personal development and leadership. That kind of work is transformational.
If we want to have better clients, we need to have the personal and business capacity for better clients. How do we do that? We need systems. We need leadership. We need strategy. We need to become better versions of ourselves.
Too many CPAs look for the fastest, cheapest continuing education they can get just to check a box. Instead, we should all look for the CPE that will deliver the greatest return to us and our practice.
So, this week, Tom challenges you to look at yourself and ask, How can I grow myself so that I can serve more people well? Then, go out and find the resources you need to get there.
