As a CPA, how can handling a mistake the right way lead to growth?

As CPAs, we are trained not to make mistakes. Tom thinks that’s wrong.

Instead of learning — or trying to learn — how to avoid mistakes at all costs, we should train on how to handle mistakes when they happen.

You see, there are 4 basic ways to handle a mistake:

You can deny that what has happened is a mistake.

You can blame someone else for the mistake.

You can rationalize the mistake.

Or you can admit the mistake.

That last option is always the best way to handle a mistake. When you own a mistake, a couple of things happen.

First, you diffuse most of the tension or anger others may be feeling as a result of the mistake. A heartfelt apology can quickly take the energy out of conflict and allows you to work toward a solution.

When you admit a mistake, you open yourself up to learn from the mistake. That’s the best way to avoid repeating the same mistake again.

In this way, mistakes can be a gift. If you’re trying to grow your practice, making small mistakes, owning them quickly and learning from the experience can accelerate your growth far more effectively than obsessing over striving for perfection.

So, stop trying to never make a mistake. Instead, learn how to admit your mistakes, learn and grow.
